When I think of summer, I think of grilling on the barbecue and drinking outside. Saveur obviously feels the same way, because last night they put on their fifth annual summer-welcoming barbecue at the Boat Basin. Ticket holders were treated to an open bar, as well as small surf n’ turf bites from fifteen chefs from around the country.
Being a representative of Burger Weekly, I found myself surprised that I didn’t first zero in on Amanda Freitag’s mini lamb burger, but rather started my feast with the hot dog from the Meat Hook’s Sara Bigelow and Brent Young. I’m not much of a hot dog guy, but this one was a great prelude-to-burgers, with just enough spice for me to notice without messing up my palate for what was to come.
Not wanting to spoil my appetite, I made my way over to Freitag’s station and watched her piece together her lamb burger. The green goddess dress looked beautiful as it was poured over the lamb patty, which itself had been carefully placed on a grilled tomato chutney-topped bun. The chutney was the primary flavor, though hints of the lamb patty and dressing were present and appreciated. The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism was serving up burgers as well.
Between the excellent food and the dangerously plentiful and delicious Unibroue beers (La Fin du Monde?! Turn down for what indeed!), I left satiated, happy, and counting down the days to next year’s barbecue.
