The Experience: Jake’s Place Tavern is a little hole-in-the-wall just on the outskirts of the gargantuan Boyne Mountain Resort that engulfs most of the tiny town of Boyne Falls, MI (population 294). As is typical with most small Northern Michigan bars, the walls are adorned with dead animals and various sports memorabilia. It’s a pretty unassuming place and if you blink you could drive right past and miss it.
Burger Ordered: Barbeque Cheddar Burger
The Taste: For a small establishment and a limited menu, Jake’s Place did offer a couple of different burger variations. My love of barbeque sauce led me in that direction, and as usual I was not steered wrong. The barbeque cheddar burger comes just like it sounds and it delivered about what I expected it to. They don’t ask how you want the burger cooked, and it came somewhere in the neighborhood of medium to medium well, which is not ideal but still preserves enough of the flavor to make it worthwhile. The cheddar, barbeque sauce, and bun were all standard offerings, but this is a hard burger to screw up and Jake’s Place did no such thing. This is a well-made burger.
The Verdict: While not worth going out of your way for, Jake’s Place Tavern offers up some solid burgers at a good price. Options in Boyne Falls are pretty limited, so unless you want to go into the giant resort, Jake’s Place will do right by you.
