I have to hand it to the crew behind this year’s Choice Streets food truck event. The night was well-run, well-staffed, well-fed, and most importantly it was wholly different from last year’s iteration. While hopefully more a testament to an expanding New York City food truck scene and not a sign of high turnover, most of the food I sampled this year was not available at Choice Streets 2013. Aside from the new trucks, the most obvious change to the event came in the form of passports, which helped event-goers to keep track of which trucks at which they’d already dined, while allowing event staff to make sure that nobody was getting seconds before anyone else got firsts.
The most exciting part of the evening for me, of course, was the burger that I sampled at Uncle Gussy’s. Priding themselves on their traditional Greek offerings, Gussy’s offers a totally different take on the Greek Burger than those I had tried before. Served between two deliciously oiled pieces of pita, a skillfully grilled patty is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce, and cheese. Just typing these sentences out is bringing back sense-memories that are making my mouth water. As if the tasty and unique burger wasn’t enough, Uncle Gussy’s nephews are stand-up, friendly dudes that will make you glad you traded your dollars for their goods.
Choice Streets had much more than just burgers. The night was spent devouring pizza, and pita, and dumplings, and chicken wings, and ice cream, and rice, and a myriad of other foods. Burger Weekly decided to forgo live tweeting the event in favor of something much more contemporary: a Snapchat Story. Here’s hoping next year’s Choice Streets story is just as delicious, and in the meantime make sure you add BurgerWeekly on Snapchat so that you can use that app to receive the kind of photos it was truly made for… food porn.
