At the very beginning of 2012, I had a hamburger with a bun that changed the way that I think about burgers. Andrew Zurica’s burger masterpiece at The Luncheonette proved to me that not only can a bun can elevate a decent hamburger, but that it can make a great hamburger legendary. The Luncheonette is no longer in business, but Zurica’s new burger truck, “Hard Times Sundaes,” debuted last night at the NY Burger Week closing event. In honor of Zurica’s glorious return to burger slinging, I’m cluing you in to the best hamburger buns being served in New York City.
5. Fritzl’s Lunch Box
“The soft, sesame seeded potato bun conformed to the shape of the patty, cushioning the burger in a way that only the most comforting of brunch burgers is able to accomplish.”
Fritzl’s Lunch Box is located at 173 Irving Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
4. Queens Comfort
“The Sugar Hill Burger is sandwiched between two sides of a pillowy challah bun coated in honey. My first bite took me straight to heaven. The bun was so soft.”
Queens Comfort is located at 40-09 30th Avenue in Queens, New York.
3. DuMont/DuMont Burger
“Matt couldn’t stop talking about the DuMont Burger’s exquisite [brioche] bun. He suspected that when someone orders a DuMont Burger, someone in the kitchen makes a call to a local bakery so that they can run over and grab a freshly baked bun. He marked this as the best part of the meal.” | “The bun was simple and sweet and paired well with the burger’s juicy ooze.”
DuMont Burger is located at 314 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
2. Bo’s Kitchen and Bar Room
“The ultimate standout element of this burger was its bun. Baked in-house with a similar flavor to the monkey bread, the bread-border of this burger made me wish I could take home a baker’s dozen for some midnight noshing.”
Bo’s Kitchen and Bar Room is located at 6 West 24th Street in Manhattan, New York.
1. Commerce
“The pillowy, sweet, and obviously freshly homemade bun was the first element of the burger to smack me in the face and wake me up from my morning stupor. Every bite I took of this burger ultimately left me commenting on the incredible bun. I don’t think a better burger bun has been tasted in the history of Burger Weekly.”
Commerce is located at 50 Commerce Street in Manhattan, New York.
