The Experience: At first glance, Timothy’s Pub is an establishment that should look very familiar to Northern Michigan residents. Pubs like this are pretty common, and the décor invites hunters and sports-watchers to come drink Bud Light and Miller High Life. After a quick Google search, I found that the burgers found within were highly regarded, and when I found myself in Gaylord for a job fair I decided I had to visit.
Burger Ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger
The Taste: Delicious. This is a great burger and even a step above the also excellent burger at the nearby Alpine Tavern & Eatery. The 1/3 lb. beef patty was cooked a perfect medium rare, and is a true slow-down burger in both senses of the word – I couldn’t wait to finish eating it and it got a little messy. As soon as I get my Burger Lift that should no longer be a problem. The cheese on top was shredded cheddar and Swiss, which doesn’t often work, but this was melted perfectly and made the burger look unique and even more appetizing. The bacon was perfectly crisp and toped everything off just as I like it. The bun was nothing to write home about, but with everything else going on there I hardly noticed. Also, the chili cheese fries were ridiculously good, with the chili adding a nice spice that didn’t overwhelm and tied the whole experience together.
The Verdict: Gaylord has two excellent burgers just 440 feet apart, which is a pretty impressive achievement for a city with a population of 3,645. Timothy’s Pub has a slight edge here, and until further notice has earned the title of Best Burger in Gaylord.
