I’ve been dying to get to Brennan and Carr in Brooklyn for quite some time now. I’ve heard rave reviews about their roast beef sandwich and the atmosphere, but haven’t had the opportunity to make the trip. That was until a couple of weeks ago when I realized that they also serve burgers. The restaurant opened on Nostrand Avenue in 1938, and when you walk in, you immediately realize not much has been changed since then (including the prices). The waiters wear white coats, the tables are old and wooden, and the menu is on your placemat and a board posted at the end of either of the seating rooms. There is a Peter Luger-type atmosphere to the restaurant and I loved every second of it.
Burger Ordered: The Gargiulo Burger
The Taste: The taste of this burger is incomparable to others for a few reasons. The burger comes topped with American cheese, grilled onions, and freshly sliced roast beef (which is possibly the most delicious roast beef you can find). I also asked for the burger to be “double-dipped”, which in Brennan and Carr lingo means that the meats are dipped in the famous beef broth twice. This leads to the bun soaking up a lot of this juice and adding even more taste to the burger. You can tell you’re eating Brooklyn bread when tasting the bun, which was perfect. I also had some cheese fries and onion rings on the side. While the fries weren’t anything special, the onion rings were very good. And if that wasn’t enough food, once all of this was finished, I had to order a roast beef sandwich with American cheese and grilled onions, and of course had to have this double-dipped. This was the best roast beef sandwich I’ve ever had.
The Verdict: The Gargiulo Burger made my visit to Brennan and Carr well worth the wait and anticipation. I definitely won’t take so long to make a return visit.
Brennan and Carr is located at 3432 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
